Overview

The Customs Operator / Declarant is responsible for the accurate and timely preparation, submission, and follow-up of customs declarations and related formalities. This role requires solid knowledge of customs and VAT regulations, tariff classification, and operational compliance. The declarant works under the supervision of the Customs Manager and supports all legal and procedural obligations within the customs domain, always operating in line with AIT’s core values: integrity, reliability, and compliance excellence.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and submit import, export, and transit declarations in accordance with applicable legislation.
• Apply correct HS codes and tariff rates based on product classification.
• Handle documents related to bonded warehouses, fiscal representation, and excise duties.
• Verify and collect all required documentation for customs entries.
• Communicate with clients regarding customs requirements, document needs, and declaration status.
• Maintain and update customer mandates and relevant records.
• Signal anomalies or inconsistencies to the Customs Manager.
• Collaborate with internal departments for smooth operational execution.
• Assist team members during peak times or absence.
• Contribute to a continuous improvement mindset and quality-driven culture.
  
  

Qualifications

• Proven experience as a customs declarant or in a similar position.
• Sound knowledge of EU and Belgian customs regulations.
• Strong administrative accuracy and organizational skills.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Familiarity with customs formalities for ocean freight; airfreight knowledge is an asset.
• Knowledge of customs and VAT legislation.
• Fluent oral and written English is a must.
