Job Overview

Team/Role Overview

Citi is a preeminent banking partner for institutions with cross-border needs, a global leader in wealth management and a valued personal bank in its home market of the United States. Citi does business in nearly 160 countries and jurisdictions, providing corporations, governments, investors, institutions, and individuals with a broad range of financial products and services.

This new role, located in our Brussels office, is a key addition to Citi’s Government Affairs (GA) practice in Europe. Reporting to the Head of GA for Europe and the United Kingdom based in Paris, the position collaborates closely with two existing senior colleagues in Brussels as well as European GA colleagues in London, Dublin, Paris, Stockholm, and Warsaw, Citi senior business management, and key partners across the firm’s businesses and functions. The team drives outcomes in three key areas: influencing legislative change, building high-level relationships with key policymakers, and providing geopolitical analysis about trends and developments that impact Citi.

What you'll do:

  • Contribute to the development and execution of the GA team’s advocacy strategy to influence public policy affecting Citi’s business as a US bank operating in Europe. Includes:

    • Provide timely, insightful, data-driven intelligence and guidance on political, legislative, and geopolitical developments and their potential impact on Citi, by identifying new developments, triaging impact to Citi and monitoring evolving trends.

    • Author executive-level briefing papers, presentations, and reports on policy issues impacting Citi for use by Citi executives and senior lobbyists in meetings with policymakers; ensure all relevant team information is incorporated.

  • Contribute to Citi’s GA coverage of the EU institutions and lead Citi’s GA coverage in designated Central European markets, with an initial focus on the Czech Republic and Hungary, by developing and executing a strategic engagement plan to advance Citi’s priorities on public policy. Includes:

    • Develop and implement engagement plans aligned with regional priorities, in coordination with the practice head.

    • Build and maintain working relationships with policymakers, including MEPs and their staff, officials in the European Commission and the Council of the EU, and national governments.

    • Communicate Citi’s public policy positions and their impact.

    • Represent Citi in meetings with policy organizations and in public fora.

    • As assigned by the practice head, lead Citi advocacy on legislation.

    • As delegated by the practice head, support targeted engagement in other key markets, particularly Germany.

What we'll need from you:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification required; advanced degree preferred.

  • 5+ years of experience in government affairs or related field, including an EU institution or a national government, a major corporation, a trade association, or other business organization

  • Deep understanding of the EU's political, legislative, and regulatory environment.

  • Preferred: strong existing relationships with officials in the EU institutions; familiarity with the political systems of major EU member states or CEE countries; experience working on public policy issues in financial services or other highly regulated industries.

  • Excellent English oral and written communication skills; prefer professional fluency in additional European languages, particularly German and French.

  • Ability to travel within the EU as required.

  • Public Policy and Political Insights. Strong understanding of how government actions impact business decisions. Significant knowledge of European political trends and their implications on financial services policy. Demonstrated ability to translate political dynamics into actionable recommendations and engagement approaches for effective government affairs engagement strategy.

  • Leadership. Team player able to build trusted relationships with policymakers and business partners. Experience with building, coordinating and engaging colleagues and networks across geographies and functions. Can interact and communicate effectively and comfortably with a wide range of audiences including Citi executives, internal business partners, and government officials.

  • Results Orientation. Self-motivated, strategic, outcomes-focused professional able to manage multiple priorities, operate effectively in ambiguity, and deliver high-quality work with limited supervision while partnering closely with senior leadership. Able to think both strategically and tactically to achieve government affairs policy advocacy outcomes.
